Why I love Mayor Richard M. Daley ›

“Barry Bonds – [the feds are] worried about steroids. I mean, there wouldn’t be any athletes today – I mean, after Barry Bonds for steroids? For what? You go after the distributor, the person that sells. Why Barry Bonds? I can’t understand. We’re spending millions of dollars on this. If I could spend millions of dollars in prosecution of all these people [who deal drugs and illegal guns], that would be worth it. But to go after Barry Bonds, in this day and age … I just wonder. I just wonder why,” Daley continued.

After his passionate defense of Vick and Bonds, the mayor would not say whether he thought the federal case against his former patronage chief Robert Sorich and two other aides was a fair use of law enforcement power. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday failed to overturn the corruption convictions of Sorich and two other former officials who rigged the city hiring process in favor of patronage workers loyal to the mayor’s organization.

Daley cut off a question about the patronage case, saying “They can prosecute any case they want. It doesn’t matter. They can prosecute anything they want.” [Clout Street]

You couldn’t make up the stuff Daley spews in his off-the-cuff rants if you tried.
