I always found this interview pretty heartbreaking from about the two-minute mark on. I’m sure he loved his success and the access it afforded him, but that success meant he could no longer do what he truly loved — observing as a fly on the wall. It’s pretty hard to be a reporter when you’ve created a larger-than-life persona that people expect you to be at all times.

This is a great little BBC documentary that supplements the Criterion Collection version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
