My dad told me something last night that I’m still struggling to believe. His father, my grandfather, will be voting for Barack Obama on Nov. 4.

My grandfather, a 77-year-old white man born and raised in Missouri, who as recently as Christmas referred to Obama as “that other guy.”

A man who flew the stars and bars alongside the stars and stripes behind his golf cart on property he owned, much to the dismay of his children and grandchildren.

A man who, when recalling players from his grandchildren’s high school sports games he’d recently been to, would call all of the white kids by their last name, while everyone else would be “that black number so-and-so.”

And now a man who told my father on Friday, “There’s no way in hell I’m voting for John McClane. That guy is crazy!”
