Lysacek dancing into town ›

I know the mayor of my fine hometown likes to proclaim himself the city’s “cheerleader in chief” — he was known as Officer Friendly in his days as a police officer — so I’m not surprised he would give Evan Lysacek his own day and a key to the city.

The principal of my high school, however, just set the bar extremely damn high for subsequent winners of the newly minted “Distinguished Alumni Award.”

  • A 2003 graduate of Neuqua Valley High School, Lysacek will begin his day March 26 with an all-school pep rally with the Wildcats. He will be honored as the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award at Neuqua Valley High School, presented by Principal Bob McBride and Evan’s Principal in 2003, Kathy Birkett, now superintendent of District 204.

There haven’t been any other Olympians, but we have produced a few pro athletes and some chick who graduated at 14 as valedictorian and went on to become a Disney actress.

Oh, and one person has died serving our country. But I assume that’s not distinguishable enough since he didn’t win a Medal of Honor in the process.
