Snuffing out opposing viewpoints in the name of God
I don’t know what you have against God, but some of us don’t have much against him. We look forward to his blessings… I’m trying to understand the philosophy that you want to spread in the state of Illinois…
This is the land of Lincoln where people believe in God… What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous… It’s dangerous for our children to even know your philosophy exists!
Get out of that seat! You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying! You believe in destroying what this state was built upon. [bold added by me, audio here]
Those are the words of Illinois state Rep. Monique Davis, who launched into her tirade because atheist activist Rob Sherman is taking Gov. Rod Blagojevich to task for the $1 million state grant to the preservation of a Baptist church.
Representative Davis has not only forgotten about that beautiful principle of separation of church and state that our country was founded upon, but her intolerance to the freedom of religion (or lack thereof) is the perfect example of the philosophy that really poses the greatest danger to the progression of our children.
And Eric Zorn made a great suggestion: Consider what the outcry would have been if a lawmaker had launched a similar attack on the beliefs of a religious person.
