This photo is heartbreaking. This 7-yr-old girl is now an orphan because a truck veered into the shoulder her parents were riding tandum in and killed them both. The driver is out walking free and was never ticketed or charged. Absolutely disgusting. This is her at their memorial service earlier this week.
I’m feeling a combination of rage, hatred, sadness, helplessness, and futility. Fuck cars for not being held accountable when they are the ones who need to be looking out for us as they are the most dangerous thing on the road. Fuck our governor for vetoing the Safe Passing Law. We have to vote that *bleep* out of office. My anger is enormous, my heart is breaking. This little girl’s life has been changed forever, and no one is having to answer to that. If this accident had involved two pedestrians, this story would be much different.
And in a sick twist, the signature of little girl’s father is on the BikeTexas petition that has been circulating since Perry’s veto in June. It currently has over 5,000 signatures expressing their protestations, and you can add yours here.
“Bicyclists on the road treated no better than deer” indeed.

Lance Armstrong has shied away after hinting about a possible run at governor of Texas after his career in cycling to refocus on being the president of the “Cancer Fighters’ Union of the World,” but I’m kind of surprised he’s not more vocal about this, being that it’s in his home state and every other Tweet from him is about being excited to get back to ATX to sleep in his own bed or going for a four-hour ride around Texas hill country. He’s in tight with at least one state representative.
Doesn’t he realize how fast this would get passed if he lobbied on behalf of Texas cyclists? Or that this could easily be one of his kids in the picture.
