Maher: U.S. Is Michael Jackson — ‘In Debt, On Drugs and Over the Hill’ (via NewsBusters)
Bill Maher on America:
Michael Jackson IS America. We love him so much because he reflects our nation perfectly: fragile, over-indulgent, childish, in debt, on drugs, and over the hill… Monday is the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong first setting foot on the moon, and I can’t think of any ambitious goal we’ve reached since then.
At what point does hating America, the way Bill Maher does, get old? Does he really mean it, or is he really just a secret ingenious capitalist who has found a market niche of people who despise this country and make up his viewership? If it’s all an act (the self-righteous arrogance, the insufferable smug smirk, the condescending tone, the perpetual America bashing) then this man is indeed a genius.
The clip is more than six and a half minutes long… more than any normal human being could bear. Listen in at 2:13 for the quote above. The “America hasn’t achieved anything since the Moon landing” nonsense comes in towards the end of the clip.
I love America, which is why I love Bill Maher, because I don’t want America to be mediocre. I want America to be better. Self-flaggelation doesn’t really get us anywhere.
America spends plenty of time congratulating itself, we need more Bill Mahers to keep us honest.
What Soup said.
