While I’ll agree that Chief Wahoo is a pretty racist depiction, it’s not like the Chicago Blackhawks portray Native Americans like how the University of Illinois did with Chief Illiniwek, parading around a white kid dressed in warpaint and a head-dress to do some flamboyant gymnastic dances at half-time in “honor” of Native American heritage.
Actually, while the Blackhawks’ mascot may be a play on words of Native American symbols, Tommy Hawk is just a bird in a Blackhawks jersey. It’s unfortunate that some fans show up dressed as Indians, but with the Blackhawks being an Original Six team, the indian head having been on the jersey since it joined the NHL in 1926 and the indian head being voted as the best logo in hockey recently, I don’t see it going anywhere in the near future.
