White whine of the weekend
There are few things that will kill my appetite faster than when a family brings a child to a nice sushi house, gets seated at the table next to me and whips out a chicken nugget happy meal for their toddler. Seriously. That smell is fucking offensive. Thanks for ruining my last few rolls. </white whine>

On long-term deals and why they need to stay →
The boys at Second City Hockey have a pretty great piece piggybacking off Puck Daddy’s analysis of some GMs wanting to scrutinize the “lifetime” deals that are starting to pop up around the NHL. If the NHL is ever going to compete with the NFL, SamFels of SCH says we need to keep long-term deals to build great teams: It’s better for the game if great teams stay together....

Mexican growers having big pot year in CA →
Mexican drug traffickers have expanded their marijuana-growing operations in California parks as state and local governments have tightened spending and slashed jobs and services. Law enforcement officials say the traffickers, taking advantage of the fact that there are fewer sheriff’s deputies and rangers monitoring parks, are cultivating more pot than ever before. This year’s...

My life philosophy
Garth Algar: Um, Wayne? What do you do if every time you see this one incredible woman, you think you're gonna hurl?
Wayne Campbell: I say hurl. If you blow chunks and she comes back, she's yours. But if you spew and she bolts, then it was never meant to be.

at&t blocks parts of 4chan
annicka: “Users of AT&T’s DSL internet access across many states in the US are reporting that they are being blocked from the infamous /b/ message board in what appears to be an act of internet censorship by the phone company. This started today Sunday and no one has yet been able to get any official confirmation out of AT&T as to why.” - gawker as cajun boy wrote, this will end badly....

Everything's crazier in Texas →
The Christian right is making a fresh push to force religion onto the school curriculum in Texas with the state’s education board about to consider recommendations that children be taught that there would be no United States if it had not been for God. Members of a panel of experts appointed by the board to revise the state’s history curriculum, who include a Christian...

Close Calls: Episode 2
thebikebeat: Incident location: Near intersection of Cedar Glade Drive and Leverenz Road Disgraced Illinois ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich signed legislation back in 2004 increasing penalties if you hit a construction worker on an Illinois roadway. Every few miles now you’ll see signs saying “Hit a worker, $10,000 fine, 14 years in jail.” What I’d like to know is what the penalty is when a...

Black scholar's arrest raises profiling questions →
Supporters of a prominent Harvard University black scholar who was arrested at his own home by police responding to a report of a break-in say he is the victim of racial profiling. Henry Louis Gates Jr. had forced his way through the front door of his home because it was jammed, his lawyer said Monday. Cambridge police say they responded to the well-maintained two-story home near campus after...

Dead Magazine Walking →
Every so often you stumble over a statistic that takes your breath away. Here’s one: Newsweek’s paid newsstand circulation averages just under 67,000 copies a week. Let’s see if we can estimate how many different places Newsweek can be purchased. Newsstand sales aren’t restricted to newsstands; they include all places magazines are sold, including supermarkets,...

Why I'm so optimistic.
jayparkinsonmd: I very much believe that “healthcare reform” (if we see any “reform”) will be legislated handouts to those current players who spend the most on lobbyists. I have no faith in our government to do the right thing given that our government feels the need to protect corporate interests more than citizen interests. However, companies come and companies go. Ford lost. Enron lost. The...

Missouri car dealer offers free AK-47 with new truck Buy a truck and get a free AK-47 gun. That’s the deal a Missouri truck dealer is offering new customers who buy a pick-up truck in August. Mark Muller, owner of Max Motors in Butler, says he knows people will be bothered by the promotion. But not to worry, Muller is not handing out free guns. Instead, he will give buyers a voucher to...

Stealth Starbucks: aka 15th Ave Coffee and Tea →
In the continued flailings of the Starbucks chain, here’s a new one: the stealth Starbucks store. A Seattle outlet of the 16,000-store coffee behemoth is being rebranded without visible Starbucks identifiers, as 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea. Best part of the story: “The Goliath is coming at me under a new name,” said Dan Ollis, owner of Victrola Coffee Roasters, a coffee...

Roger Ebert on 500 Days of Summer: Four Stars →
tylercoates: jeffcagle: Is there any greater affirmation of a quality film than that? Slow down there, hoss. He gave Crash the same amount of stars. True. I guess I just got all excited because I saw Zooey and Four Stars. But you have to admit, it’s not like it’s Rolling Stone giving an album a four-star review. A Roger Ebert review at least still means something.

My bird's a perv.
alanfm78: Coco is in the shower, and Charlie just flew in to the bathroom. He’s standing on the shower curtain rod, looking down and whistling catcalls at her. She’s calling him a perv, and telling him to get out. The louder she yells, the more he “laughs” and continues. He sounds like a construction worker. I’m really enjoying this. Note to self: If ever in L.A., screw all the landmarks. Gotta...
