Schaumburg turns off red-light camera near... →
Installing red-light cameras at busy intersections is a growth industry, but one northwest suburban community has pulled the plug on a highly profitable camera amid worries a premier shopping venue was getting a reputation as a ticket destination. Located at Meacham and Woodfield Roads near Woodfield Mall, the camera raked in $1 million in fines for Schaumburg between November and January. The...

Official: Pentagon lifts ban on KIA coverage →
The Pentagon lifted its ban Thursday on media coverage of coffins of war victims as they arrive at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, according to a senior U.S. defense official with direct knowledge of the decision. The coverage must be approved by families. Today is a good day for the First Amendment.

Why I love Mayor Richard M. Daley →
“Barry Bonds – [the feds are] worried about steroids. I mean, there wouldn’t be any athletes today – I mean, after Barry Bonds for steroids? For what? You go after the distributor, the person that sells. Why Barry Bonds? I can’t understand. We’re spending millions of dollars on this. If I could spend millions of dollars in prosecution of all these people [who deal drugs and illegal guns], that...

That Old Master? It’s at the Pawnshop  →
Last fall, Annie Leibovitz, the photographer, borrowed $5 million from a company called Art Capital Group. In December, she borrowed $10.5 million more from the same firm. As collateral, among other items, she used town houses she owns in Greenwich Village, a country house, and something else: the rights to all of her photographs. In other words, according to loan documents filed with the city,...

One of my favorite blogging photojournalists out there right now, Beck Diefenbach, has uploaded a multimedia post from his travels with friends to Europe last summer. It’s a few mini-stories in one, but it’s a great example that it doesn’t take much more than a camera and an audio recorder to capture all the necessary elements to help create a compelling story. It doesn’t...

Internet Conspiracy of the Week
UPDATED 2/24: There have been new developments to this story. Here are my thoughts. Last week we all experienced the brouhaha over Tumblr suspending five accounts whose primary focuses were to parse posts of a few select Tumblr users. It seems another conspiracy is brewing this week. Only this time it’s on Flickr. Flickr users Rosie Hardy and Aaron Nace “met” on Flickr while...

Mayor Richard M. Daley's YouTube page →
Daley promises visitors to his site will be able to meet with him — we assume that means by watching videos his staff produce. But how often will that actually happen? As regular users of YouTube or any other community site know — there are those who live and breathe through their FaceBook, MySpace and YouTube pages. And then, there are those who create nice looking sites and never...

I went skydiving this weekend
malty: after getting wasted. Breaking my camera. losing my wallet. Making out with some boy (or so I heard.. I dont recall). getting denied at the DMV. Throwing up on the side of the road. Jumping out of a plane was just what I needed. I have never been happier and then I went back to bed. This is definitely deserving of my 300th “liked” post

Triple murder spurs call for action →
Three teenagers aged 13 to 17 were cut down last week on Chicago’s South Side in a hail of gunfire that police believe was from an AK-47 assault rifle. Yesterday the “reverends” were out in force, calling for an end to the gun violence. What did they ask for? Parents to take responsibility for their children and be more active in their lives? Another no-questions-asked gun...

Jeff Rubin posted this back on July 18, the day The Dark Knight was released. Let’s go ahead and rub it in a little harder for those 2006 Digg commenters tonight: jeffrubinjeffrubin: (almost two years ago to the day) While I will attempt to not compare him to Nicholson or “The Batman” joker, I just dont know if Ledger has that crazy and creepy side needed to play the joker. The only award I even really care about is Best Supporting Actor. I haven’t seen a single Best Picture nominee this year. After that opening number, I’m pretty sure I’m making the right choice by keeping it tuned to the rest of the Blackhawks game, then Big Love and Eastbound and Down.

Douche of the Week (Feb. 14-20)
loldouches: It was certainly a lively little week out there on the internets. When Facebook decided to tweak its terms of service, users proceeded to shit a brick and the social networking site promptly reversed course. Why, even here on the platform for our site, Tumblr founder David Karp got himself into a bit of a pickle by changing its policy as well. How was the suspension of five fairly...
